The Shutter Island Effect: Expectations

One may think "The Shutter Island" effect has something to do with being crazy but that's not what I am talking about. I am talking about expectations. Why did Shutter Island have such a mediocre response even though it was directed by the (finally) Academy Award winning director Martin Scorsese with his favorite actor Leonardo DiCaprio? Expectations of course. People didn't get what they were expecting.

Let me break it down for you:

Which birthdays are the greatest let downs? Many times it is the one that you were most excited for.

So the key to having a good time is..... to expect a mediocre one... sure you can hope for better but don't expect it! That is the key to let downs!!!

But back to Shutter Island.... I don't put the blame on the viewers for expecting a good movie. I put the blame on whoever made the damn trailer!!!!! This was not the suspenseful thriller everyone thought it would be! It is understandable to send a completely different message in the trailer if you know the movie isn't too hot... it is a great way to get people to come to the movie anyways - example: Transformers 2.

But Shutter Island WAS a good movie..... but because of expectations, not everyone thought so. 100% guarantee if they could do it again they would make a much different trailer. So if you haven't seen it... changes your expectations a little bit... even having no expectations would be a great improvement for your own enjoyment of the film.
