Wonder of Covers - Gnarles Barkley's Crazy

It is a bummer that we always have to compare things in terms of "what's better." Perfect example, song covers: Ray Lamontagne's cover of Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy."

Here are my reasons for why it is hip in its own, incomparable-way:

- Great for discovering new artists. What are the chances I would have heard of Ray Lamontagne any other way? I like the original... he does too... maybe I will like more of his music.

- More of a good song. For the most part the original version is already a pretty good song to begin with. The new version allows for more situations to listen to it. The acoustic version feels much differently then the original. If it is bad... listen once and don't listen again.. thats not too difficult.

- Get to know the artist better. Gives the listener a better sense of what the artist likes to listen to (google your favorite and I am sure you will be surprised by a lot of things they like). Also nice to see their interpretation as well.

Below are a bunch of different versions of the song that I was particularly fond of.

Katie Noonan's Groovy Take

Shira Gavrielov

Beyonce Live

Nelly Furtado

  1. my 2006 Lollaplooza experience was one big cover of "crazy". i think like 4 bands at the festival covered it with a final one done by Nick Pomplun back at our place!

  2. Hahaha who would have thought Cee-Lo Green would have been a part of making such a cover worthy song
